  • Saudi driver Farah Al-Yousef to compete as wild card in F1 Academy Jeddah round

Saudi racing talent Farah Al-Yousef will make her debut in the 2025 F1 Academy series as a wild-card entry during Round 2 of the championship in Jeddah this weekend.

JEDDAH – Saudi racing talent Farah Al-Yousef will make her debut in the 2025 F1 Academy series as a wild-card entry during Round 2 of the championship in Jeddah this weekend, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by the Saudi Motorsport Company, main promoter of the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which will host the F1 Academy race as part of its race weekend from April 18 to 20 at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

Al-Yousef’s participation follows in the footsteps of fellow Saudi driver Reema Juffali, who made an appearance in the series at the same venue last year.

“Racing as a wild-card entry in the F1 Academy on home soil here in Jeddah is truly a dream come true,” Al-Yousef said.

“I hope my participation inspires young girls across Saudi Arabia to believe in themselves and chase their dreams.”

The 21-year-old has already made a name for herself in karting, winning the Saudi Women’s Karting Championship in 2022 and competing at the Karting World Finals, where she finished 26th.

She will also represent Saudi Arabia at the FW Nations Cup Finals in Dubai in May.

The F1 Academy, launched in 2023, is an all-female racing series aimed at developing young female drivers aged 16 to 25.

The 2025 season spans seven rounds, each held as part of the F1 World Championship calendar, with races scheduled in Asia, Europe and North America.

After the opener in Shanghai, the series will move to Jeddah before heading to Miami, Montreal, Zandvoort and Singapore, concluding with the finale in Las Vegas in November.

  • Rybakina leads Kazakhstan to a 2-1 win over Australia in BJK Cup

Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina hits a return during the women’s singles match against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell at the Billie Jean King Cup at Patrick Rafter Tennis Center in Brisbane on Thursday. (AFP)

BRISBANE – Elena Rybakina showcased her prowess to beat Kimberly Birrell 6-3 7-6(4) as Kazakhstan secured a 2-1 win over Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup Group D qualifier in Brisbane on Thursday.

Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, went down an early break but cranked up her powerful forehand and drew level after six games before claiming the opening set with an ace.

Birrell raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set but squandered a set point and Rybakina clawed her way back with some ferocious shot-making to clinch victory in the tiebreak.

“It was such a difficult match,” said Rybakina, who secured her eighth victory in 10 singles matches since her debut in the competition in 2021.

“I’m super happy to bring the win for the team … it’s always nice to be back in Australia.”

Earlier at the Pat Rafter Arena, Yulia Putintseva gave Kazakhstan an early lead with a 6-2 6-1 win over debutant Maya Joint.

However, Australia’s Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez claimed the third match of the night with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva in the doubles.

Czech Republic beat Brazil 2-1 in Ostrava in Group B, while the Netherlands cruised past Germany 3-0 in The Hague in Group F.

Poland, without French Open champion Iga Swiatek after the world No. 2 opted to skip their Group E ties to focus on her training ahead of the clay season, beat Switzerland 3-0 in Radom.

Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins were among a trio of players to withdraw from the US team, which plays Denmark on Saturday in Group C, for the three-day qualifiers.

Teams have been divided into six round-robin groups of three in the qualifiers this year with the winners joining hosts China and 2024 champions Italy at the Finals in Shenzhen toward the end of the season.

  • Malaysian couple completes Ramadan fasting journey through Asia to perform Umrah

Malaysian backpackers Farhan Mokhali and Ainaa Fakhira reach the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah on March 23, 2025. (Farhan Mokhali)

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian backpackers who traveled through seven countries to reach Saudi Arabia for Umrah have completed their 30-day Ramadan journey, fasting with Muslim communities they visited along the way.

Farhan Mokhali, 28, and Ainaa Fakhira, 27, started their journey from Padang Besar, a town bordering Thailand in the northern part of the Malaysian state of Perlis.

“The inspiration and idea solely came from Ainaa. She is the one who has always dreamed of being a backpacker and traveling around the world since she was a teenager,” Mokhali told Arab News.

“After several years of postponing the dream, in 2025 she decided to pursue it because she didn’t want to wait any longer.”

From Hatyai on the other side of the border, they reached Bangkok and traveled to Vientiane in Laos, from where they crossed to Kunming in China and traveled to Xi’an and further to Khorgos, where they entered Kazakhstan.

There the land journey had to end when they faced problems in obtaining visas to Turkmenistan and Syria.

Within 30 days, they visited seven countries, taking 10 trains, three buses and two aeroplanes.

Self-employed and running a media startup, they kept on working during their travel, which they estimate cost them about $4,300 in total.

While the journey took place during Ramadan, both kept on fasting as they experienced the cultures of various Muslim communities that they met on their way.

“We camped in the snow in negative temperatures and hiked 15 km during snowfall just to experience the Altyn Arashan hot springs while fasting in Kyrgyzstan. We loved every part of this journey since it gave us the chance to spend more quality time together and learn a lot of new things,” Mokhali said.

“We are also thankful to have had the opportunity to experience the beauty of Ramadan in other countries. We experienced different cultures, like iftar with the locals, Taraweeh at different mosques in several countries, and many more Ramadan traditions.”

Last week they reached Madinah, from where they traveled to Makkah to complete their pilgrimage.

It was the best part of their journey because they could experience Umrah together, Mokhali said, as they packed to return home on Saturday, right before the end of the fasting month.

“We are going to celebrate Eid in Malaysia,” he added. “We are going back to Malaysia tomorrow. We haven’t experienced Ramadan in our country this year yet.”

  • Terbaik dan Terburuk: Ratana Mohammed

    Ratana Mohammed.

Nah, ia sebenarnya siri anime yang dipanggil “Attack On Titan”.

“The Four Agreements”.

    Destinasi percutian paling teruk?

    Setiap tempat mempunyai keajaibannya sendiri.

    Subjek terbaik di sekolah?

Sudah tentu biologi, saya seorang gadis sains!

    Subjek paling teruk di sekolah?

    Matematik.

  • Actress Andria Tayeh fronts Armani’s latest campaign

Andria Tayeh is the Middle East beauty ambassador for Giorgio Armani.

DUBAI – Lebanese Jordanian actress Andria Tayeh this week fronted Armani’s Ramadan campaign, set against the backdrop of a desert landscape.

Draped in a flowing emerald-green abaya, Tayeh was seen in the video applying the Vert Malachite perfume from Armani Prive as the camera captured the details of the fragrance and her attire. The setting featured sand dunes stretching into the horizon.

The campaign integrates elements of regional aesthetics with Armani’s luxury branding, aligning with the themes of Ramadan. Vert Malachite, known for its rich and opulent notes, is presented as part of the brand’s seasonal focus.

“Ramadan is a time of gratitude and blessings,” the star wrote to her 1.1 million followers on Instagram. “Honored to share this journey with Armani Prive and Vert Malachite, and wishing you a month filled with light and peace.”

Tayeh, known for her roles in Austrian filmmaker Kurdwin Ayub’s “Mond” and Netflix’s hit series “Al-Rawabi School for Girls,” has had a busy start to the year, collaborating with multiple brands and fronting their campaigns.

Last month, Giorgio Armani announced her appointment as its new Middle East beauty ambassador.

She took to Instagram to express her excitement, writing: “I am thrilled and honored to embark on this new journey with Armani beauty.

“This marks a real milestone for me, as the brand embodies values I have always cherished: timeless elegance, dramatic simplicity, and women empowerment,” she said. “Armani beauty reveals one’s charismatic personality in the most subtle and natural way. It’s this pure simplicity that creates an impact, and this is exactly what I hope to bring to the Arab cinema world.”

That same month, she was named the first Middle Eastern ambassador for French hair care brand Kerastase.

In a promotional clip, she appeared in an all-white studio, answering questions about why she is the ideal Kerastase ambassador. Tayeh spoke in a mix of English, Arabic and French, playfully flipping her hair for the camera as she discusses her dedication to maintaining healthy hair.

“Growing up, hair was always a big part of my identity, and now, representing a brand that celebrates hair in all its beauty feels surreal. Here’s to confidence, strength and great hair,” Tayeh captioned her post on Instagram at the time.

(AFP)

  • Indonesia bans sales of Google smartphones days after blocking Apple’s iPhone 16

Above, the new Pixel 9 smartphone series during an unveiling event in Mountain View, California on Aug. 13, 2024. (Reuters)

JAKARTA — Indonesia said it has banned sales of smartphones made by Alphabet’s Google due to rules requiring the use of locally manufactured components, days after blocking sales of tech giant Apple’s iPhone 16 for the same reason.

Indonesia blocked sales of Google Pixel phones because the company has not met the rules which necessitate certain smartphones sold domestically to contain at least 40 percent of parts manufactured locally.

“We are pushing these rules so that there’s fairness for all investors in Indonesia,” Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, industry ministry spokesperson, said on Thursday.

“Google’s products have not adhered to the scheme we set, so they can’t be sold here.”

Febri said consumers can buy Google Pixel phones overseas, so long as they pay the necessary taxes, adding the country would consider deactivating the phones that are illicitly sold.

Google did not immediately respond to a message and email requesting comment.

The block comes a week after Indonesia said it had blocked the sales of iPhone 16 domestically, also for not meeting local content rules.

Companies usually increase the use of domestic components to meet such rules through partnerships with local suppliers or by sourcing parts domestically.

Google and Apple are not among the top smartphone makers in Indonesia.

The top two smartphone makers in the first quarter of 2024 were Chinese firm OPPO and South Korean firm Samsung, research firm IDC said in May.

Indonesia has a huge, tech-savvy population, making the Southeast Asian nation a key target market for tech-related investment.

Bhima Yudhistira, director of the Center of Economic and Law Studies think tank, said the move was “pseudo” protectionism that hurts consumers and impacts investor confidence.

“This creates a negative sentiment for investors looking to enter Indonesia,” he said.

  • Saudi producer explores pearl diving in new digital art show in Dubai

Al-Ibrahim relied on AI to generate the imagery for this art exhibition. She described the process as a challenge as AI databases are not fully versed with data from the Arab world.

Saudi producer Farah Al-Ibrahim’s new digital art show “Pearls of emotions” is set to premiere at the Theater of Digital Art in Dubai on Dec. 2.

Presented by her production company Artellosa, Al-Ibrahim told Arab News she hopes this show, which explores the rich history of pearl diving in the Gulf, resonates with viewers and offers them a new perspective on the region and its culture.

“I feel it’s in my DNA to talk about pearls and our relationship to the sea. But knowing this culture and keeping it in our hearts is not enough. We need to preserve it and reflect it to international audiences,” she said.

The desire to engage a diverse audience is a key driving force behind the experience, as “Pearls of Emotion” features a unique musical score that fuses traditional Gulf melodies with contemporary sounds in order to appeal to visitors from around the globe, as well as younger generations seeking a fresh take on the exploration of Gulf heritage.

“A lot of people think our civilization started when oil money entered the region. This is not correct, we have the need and duty to change that perspective and reflect the beauty and richness of our culture,” Al-Ibrahim explained.

“Pearls of emotions” tells the story of a bride who says goodbye to her husband days after their marriage as he embarks on a pearl diving journey, explained Al-Ibrahim.

“Pearls of emotions” tells the story of a bride who says goodbye to her husband days after their marriage as he embarks on a pearl diving journey, explained Al-Ibrahim.

“The show has seven parts, each one talks about a certain emotion such as love, resilience, strength, pride and so on,” she added.

The show offers a 360° immersive journey back in time at TODA, a 1,800-square-metre immersive art space located in Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Al-Ibrahim relied on AI to generate the imagery for this art exhibition. She described the process as a challenge as AI databases are not fully versed with data from the Arab world.

By talking to her family, who have a long history in the trade, Al-Ibrahim was able to collect information on what ships, sailors and diving experiences looked and felt like so she could feed it to AI programs and generate a depiction of these stories.

“It’s very important to have these stories documented, even if it’s AI,” she said.

  • Maria Sharapova and the Bryan brothers are elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Maria Sharapova (pictured) and twins Bob and Mike Bryan are first-ballot selections for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Newport, Rhode Island-based Hall announced the Class of 2025 on Thursday. (AFP)

NEW YORK — Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion known for plenty of on-court grit and off-court attention, and Bob and Mike Bryan, twins who won a record 16 major titles in men’s doubles together, are first-ballot selections for the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Newport, Rhode Island-based Hall announced the Class of 2025 on Thursday.

Sharapova won at least one championship at each of her sport’s four most prestigious events, making her one of 10 women in tennis history to complete a career Grand Slam, and she was the first Russian woman to reach No. 1 in the WTA singles rankings. She retired in 2020 at age 32 after a career that included 15 years in the spotlight, a 15-month doping ban and multiple operations on her right shoulder.

In a message posted on social media, Sharapova called herself “incredibly grateful to receive this honor.”

The Bryan brothers also compiled a career Grand Slam and spent 438 weeks at No. 1 in the ATP doubles rankings. They won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and helped the United States win the 2007 Davis Cup title; Bob is currently the captain of the American team that will go to Malaga, Spain, for next month’s finals to compete for the country’s first triumph in that competition since then.

Mike Bryan — he’s right-handed, and his brother is a lefty — is the career leader with 18 major men’s doubles trophies overall; he got two with Jack Sock while Bob was injured in 2018.

“We are truly humbled and grateful to receive this honor. Though making it to Newport was never our goal, being included among so many of our idols and role models is incredibly special,” Bob Bryan wrote in a text message to The Associated Press on Thursday. “Mike and I continue to be best friends, and we feel lucky to have been able to ride this tennis rollercoaster together.”

Sharapova became an instant star when she won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004 at age 17 by beating Serena Williams in the final, then collected the trophies at the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and the French Open in 2012 and 2014.

Sharapova helped Russia win the team competition now known as the Billie Jean King Cup in 2008, and she claimed a silver medal in singles at the 2012 Olympics, losing to Williams in the final.

All the while, Sharapova earned millions of dollars more in endorsement deals than prize money.

“There are a couple of sides of me,” Sharapova said in an interview with the AP in 2006, shortly before she won the title at Flushing Meadows. “There’s the Maria that’s a tennis player. There’s the Maria that is a normal girl. And there’s the Maria who’s a businesswoman. And that’s where the ‘Maria Sharapova brand’ comes into play.”

At the 2016 Australian Open, Sharapova tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium and initially was handed a two-year suspension. After appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Sharapova was given a reduced penalty when it was determined that she bore “less than significant fault” in the case and could not “be considered to be an intentional doper.”

The Bryans and Sharapova will be inducted in August.

“We are thankful to so many people who supported us along the way, and we look forward to sharing this moment with them next year,” Bob Bryan wrote. ”Our parents created a magical environment at their club and made tennis fun for us. They helped us fall in love with the game, so tennis never felt like work; it was always play.”

Daniel Nestor, a Canadian who won 12 Grand Slam titles in men’s or mixed doubles, did not receive the 75 percenet of the vote required to qualify for the Hall in balloting among members of the media, historians, Hall of Fame members, industry experts and fans. This was his third — and final — year as a candidate.

  • Actor Meryl Streep shows solidarity at UN with Afghan women, girls

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 23 (Reuters) — A female cat has more freedom in Afghanistan than a woman does, Hollywood actor Meryl Streep said at the United Nations on Monday in a bid to get world leaders to focus on the plight of Afghan women and girls.

“The way that … this society has been upended is a cautionary tale for the rest of the world,” Streep told an event on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to encourage the inclusion of women in the future of Afghanistan.

The Taliban seized power in August 2021 when U.S.-led forces withdrew after 20 years of war. The U.N. has sought a unified global approach to dealing with the Taliban, who have cracked down on women’s rights.

Most girls have been barred from high school and women from universities by the Taliban. The group has closed beauty salons and curtailed travel for women without a male guardian.

“Today in Kabul a female cat has more freedoms than a woman. A cat may go sit on her front stoop and feel the sun on her face. She may chase a squirrel into the park.

A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today, because the public parks have been closed to women and girls,” Streep said.

“A bird may sing in Kabul, but a girl may not and a woman may not in public. This is extraordinary,” she said.

The Taliban say they respect rights in line with their interpretation of Islamic law.

The group formally codified a long set of rules governing morality last month that were based on a decree by the Taliban’s supreme spiritual leader in 2022 and will be enforced by the morality ministry.

“Without educated women, without women in employment, including in leadership roles, and without recognizing the rights and freedoms of one-half of its population, Afghanistan will never take its rightful place on the global stage,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the event

  • Nothing will stop me from supporting Palestine: French nurse defiant after Paris arrest

PARIS — Imane Maarifi was one of the first French people to step foot in Gaza after Israel launched its war on the enclave in October last year.

The trained nurse volunteered for two weeks at the European Hospital in Khan Younis earlier this year, and has been a vocal advocate for Palestine ever since her return, sharing her harrowing testimony at various rallies and even the French parliament.

Last week, Maarifi was arrested by French authorities, who raided her home in the early hours of Sept. 5 and took her away as her husband and two children looked on helplessly.

She was accused of “threatening to kill someone because of their race or religion,” charges stemming from a phone call she made to the owners of a venue in Paris that was hosting an Israeli real estate fair.

Speaking to Anadolu in the French capital, Maarifi said her main question to the owner of the venue was whether they knew that they were helping Israel sell occupied Palestinian land, something in contravention of international law.

Their response was dismissive and the director of the salon just hung up, she said.

During her time in custody, Maarifi was questioned about everything from her time in Gaza to her pro-Palestine advocacy in France.

“The police officers took my phone and scoured through my photos and conversations on social media. They asked me several questions about my commitment and support for Palestine, and about the NGO through which I … managed to enter Gaza,” she said.

They also took away things like a Palestinian flag, a shirt with ‘Free Palestine’ written on it, and a heart-shaped pin with the Arabic word ‘Houdna,’ which means cease-fire, she said.

Most shocking for the French activist, however, were the “intrusive” questions about her family life and children, which had “nothing to do with the investigation.”

“I had the impression – and I hope I’m wrong – that this was their attempt at intimidation, because I don’t see any reason why someone would ask about my children,” she added.

This point was also raised by French lawmaker Thomas Portes, who was among the chorus of voices that condemned Maarifi’s arrest.

“The search of the home in front of the family leaves no doubt about the desire to intimidate the voices that are raised to support the Palestinian people and demand an immediate cease-fire,” Portes wrote on X.

    Determined and undeterred

Maarifi was released later in the day without any charge.

“I had recorded the phone call and that is what saved me,” she said.

“The police were forced to see that I was not lying in my statements. I cannot even imagine what would have happened to me without that recording.”

Maarifi is now all the more determined to keep raising her voice for Palestinians.

“I am not the same person after witnessing what I did at the European Hospital in Khan Younis – the horror, blood, joy at times, and a lot of death. We are now close to 20,000 child martyrs in Gaza, and many more maimed or under the rubble,” she said.

“I am a nurse specializing in intensive care, and when you choose this specialty, it is because you love life and will do anything to protect it.”

I am willing to risk my own life in Gaza “in this time of war, of genocide, because I care about … people’s lives, which is at the very core of being a humanitarian,” she said.

“The only thing that could make me stop (supporting Palestine) is either if there is a cease-fire, decolonization, and a fair and lasting peace, or if I die,” said the medic.

  • Holocaust survivor and his family decry Israeli killing of Turkish-American activist

Stephen Kapos, a 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, speaks to AA during a protest in London, United Kingdom, against the killing of Turkish American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi in the West Bank, on September 07, 2024.

LONDON — Stephen Kapos, a Holocaust survivor, and his family have joined many to speak up against the killing of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi during a protest in the occupied West Bank.

Eygi was shot by Israeli forces on Friday while participating in a demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements in the town of Beita.

An autopsy report confirmed that she was killed by an Israeli sniper’s bullet to the head, Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas said Saturday.

Eygi, 26, had been actively involved in solidarity movements supporting Palestinian rights. Her death has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from both local and international communities.

In an interview with Anadolu, Kapos, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor from Budapest, Hungary termed the killing “outrageous.”

“I think it’s an obvious outrage because she was, I think, deliberately targeted,” he said during a march for Palestine in London over the weekend.

Kapos also called out the double standards in coverage of Israeli violence against Palestinians, saying the killing should not be paid more attention to than the killing of thousands of Palestinians since Oct. 7 last year.

“It points out the double standards of thousands of others. Palestinians are also being assassinated, murdered and nobody takes an equal amount of interest at all.”

He added that it also shows “the difference in human value given to a Western connected person or a Palestinian, and it should be equal, equal attention, equal treatment.”

Kapos was accompanied by his family members during the march, including his son Peter and daughter Andrea under a banner that said: “Holocaust survivor descendants against Gaza genocide.”

Peter called Israel’s actions “absolutely criminal.”

“It’s obviously part of the way that Israel is prosecuting this war that it assassinates civilians, and it does it in a very targeted way, but it also does it indiscriminately,” he noted.

Calling what is happening in Gaza “genocide,” he said that Eygi’s killing is a “feature of the genocide.”

“Every death is inexcusable, and every death is an absolute tragedy, and what’s happening at the moment is absolutely criminal,” he added.

Andrea labeled the killing of the activist “a symptom of the genocide.”

“There are so many, many, many people being killed, and it just needs to stop,” she said.

“I think any death, any killing, whether it’s specifically targeted or whether people have been caught in the crossfire, it just needs to stop.”

Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Oct. 7 last year.

The Israeli onslaught has killed more than 40,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 94,700, according to local health authorities.

The military campaign has also turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine.

DUBAI — Portuguese football star Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, said that it was easy for him and his family adapting to Saudi Arabia after signing with the Saudi football club to a two-and-a-half-year contract.

“To be honest, I am really happy to be there [Saudi Arabia],” Ronaldo said in an interview former Portuguese footballer, Rio Ferdinand.

“For me the adaptation was easy, and I really love it to be there,” he said. “It is a lovely country; I love to be there; my family loves to be there.”

Ronaldo was one of the first top-name recruits to the Saudi Pro League at the start of 2023, which paved the way for entry of other big-league players from Europe.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner began his club career with Portuguese side Sporting CP before joining Manchester United in 2003. Ronaldo moved to Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid after six seasons at United. He then played for two years with Juventus before making a return to the Red Devils in 2021 where he played until 2023, before departing for the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo became the first man to score 900 career goals after tapping in the ball at the 34th minute of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League group stage match against Croatia in Lisbon, which they won 2-1.

The Portuguese football star called Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea his “second house,” adding that he loves to spend time there with his family.

“The Red Sea which is my second home or [even my] first home is unbelievable like a diamond,” he said, adding that it is “one of the most beautiful places” he has ever been to.

Ronaldo also spoke on AlUla, an increasingly famous tourist spot in Saudi Arabia’s northwest located near two oases, Khaybar and Tayma.

“It is beautiful because it is spiritual, you can feel the energy there. I felt it as well, to be honest,” the Portuguese star said.

“Even in the mountains they have snow. People in Saudi [Arabia]? Yes, they have snow. They have everything, so it is a lovely country.”

  • Stay ‘committed and resistant,’ says Emirati aerospace engineer Marwa Al-Mamari

Emirati aerospace engineer Marwa Al-Mamari is featured in technology company Dyson’s new FIRSTS campaign.

DUBAI — Emirati aerospace engineer Marwa Al-Mamari is on a mission to encourage young women in the region to take up STEM careers.

Al-Mamari is featured in technology company Dyson’s new FIRSTS campaign, which “celebrates pioneering women from the region who are redefining success and innovation,” according to the brand.

Dyson added that Al-Mamari “made history” as the first Emirati woman to become an aerospace engineer. “She navigated the traditionally male-dominated field to break barriers.”

Al-Mamari told Arab News she wants to encourage women to venture out in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“I always say it doesn’t take someone smart to be what you want. It takes someone who’s committed and resistant … so as long as you have these two things, you can do whatever you want and be whoever you want.”

She added that if women do so they will “overcome all obstacles” and “receive support in return.”

Her path to a master’s in aviation safety and a career in aerospace engineering was fraught with obstacles. She said it took her years to convince her parents that she wanted a career in the traditionally male profession.

    They need not have worried.

“I was really taken care of and welcomed and taken care of sometimes, though, because you are the only girl in the room people might underestimate your voice, or your capabilities or what you can offer on the table,” she said of the first phase of her career.

“But once you speak up, you know, the magic starts — they can see there is a brain, actually.”

Al-Mamari currently works at the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, implementing safety frameworks worldwide for the regulatory body. Her core duties include setting up training sessions for operators, airport staff, and other stakeholders.

She said that what “makes you feel alive at work is … doing the drills where I go and check their readiness, make sure they are following the regulations and are up to the standards.”

“Our work, my work, wasn’t only national, it was internationally impactful,” she added, explaining her motivation.

Al-Mamari also touched on being a parent while undertaking a challenging career.

“What I try to advocate here is I always tell all mothers out there, all women, if you need to take a break from your career, do it, know your priorities.

“The minute you feel you’re ready to go back, you will always shine again because you still have that passion and all this potential.”

  • Badain Jaran Desert added to UNESCO World Heritage List

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) — China’s Badain Jaran Desert — Towers of Sand and Lakes, has successfully passed the review process to be included on the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The decision was made at the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, according to China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

Located in the hyper-arid region of northwestern China, the Badain Jaran Desert is the country’s third largest desert and second largest drifting desert.

The desert’s notable features include the world’s tallest, stabilized sand mega-dune, reaching a relative height of 460 meters, the highest concentration of inter-dunal lakes, the largest expanse of so-called singing sands and wind-eroded landforms.

The administration said that China will further enhance the protection and management of natural heritage sites, strengthen international cooperation, and promote global ecological civilization.

  • Adidas apologizes to Bella Hadid after 1972 Olympics ad furor

LONDON — Adidas has apologized to supermodel Bella Hadid after pulling her from an advertising campaign that referenced the 1972 Munich Olympics, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

Israel-linked pressure groups accused the campaign of causing offense due to Hadid’s part-Palestinian background.

At the 1972 games, 11 Israeli athletes and a German police officer were killed by the Black September group.

Hadid is reportedly considering legal action over Adidas’ decision to remove her from the campaign, which is promoting the relaunch of a shoe from the 1972 Olympics.

The brand said on Instagram: “Connections continue to be made to the terrible tragedy that occurred at the Munich Olympics due to our recent SL72 campaign.

“These connections are not meant, and we apologise for any upset or distress caused to communities around the world. We made an unintentional mistake.

“We also apologise to our partners, Bella Hadid, ASAP Nast, Jules Kounde, and others, for any negative impact on them and we are revising the campaign.”

A number of Israeli and Jewish pressure groups targeted Hadid’s involvement in the ad campaign.

The supermodel has long been an outspoken advocate of the Palestinian cause and has criticized Israel’s war in Gaza.

The American Jewish Committee claimed that Adidas was using “a vocal anti-Israel model” for a campaign that “is either a massive oversight or intentionally inflammatory.”

The CEO of the Combat Antisemitism Movement said: “To have her launch a shoe commemorating an Olympics when so much Jewish blood was shed is just sick.”
