Europe signals readiness to reduce dependency on the U.S. for security

London, IRNA – The European Commission has unveiled a White Paper aimed at enhancing Europe’s defensive capabilities in response to the deteriorating transatlantic alliance.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen cited growing concerns over diminishing U.S. defense support for Europe as the driving force behind the decision to strengthen the E.U.’s defense capacity and reduce its reliance on Washington.

“The era of the peace dividend is long gone,” von der Leyen said, according to the Associated Press. “The security architecture that we relied on can no longer be taken for granted. We must invest in defense, strengthen our capabilities, and take a proactive approach to security.”

This policy shift follows the Donald Trump administration’s declaration that U.S. security priorities have shifted to Asia, with the White House asserting that Europe must take responsibility for its own defense and provide greater support to Ukraine.

Von der Leyen emphasized the need for advancements in areas like artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to bolster defense readiness by 2030.

The European Union is expected to focus on increased spending for air and missile defense systems, artillery, drones, cyber and electronic warfare capabilities, air-to-air refueling, and land border installations.
